All About... Grunge! part 1

há 146 meses

The title of this blog entry is fairly self explanitary - All About Grunge! What is grunge you may be asking? Well, that's what I'm here to tell you and in the first paragraph I'll explain the basics. Grunge is a genre of music, and more precisely a sub-genre of rock. The term "grunge" was apparently first used by Mark Arm from the bands Mudhoney and Green River in 1981 whilst he was actually critisising a band but he says it was being thrown around Australia for a while before then, but as you can see, the word originated as a negative descriptive term for music, then over time evolved into a genre of music, a genre that in some people's opinion is one of the best there is.

Examples of grunge bands would be Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Hole, Mudhoney, Smashing Pumpkins, Tad, Bush, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and The Melvins - obviously there are lots more, these are just the most popular. The grunge sound is kind of rough, unpolished, generally with a bit of guitar feedback, and usually some gritty vocals. By the early to mid 90's almost every band that came out Seattle in the USA were labeled as grunge, because this is the area bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Melvins and the majority of early grunge bands came from. Most of these bands actually hated being stereotyped as grunge and were all about anti-labeling, Kurt Cobain (Guitarist and singer of Nirvana) famously wore a T-shirt with the slogan "Grunge is Dead" written across the front due to how he hated being labeled.
