The Perfect Fruit Salad!
Fruit salad is a easy and healthy project to make in the kitchen! It is perfect to use as a side to your meal, a snack, or to bring to a shared lunch with friends. Here are a few tips on creating the perfect fruit salad!
NOTE: Remember to get an adult's help when using knives!
The Fruit Base
When deciding on the fruits you want to use in your fruit salad, it is useful to know what types of fruit are currently in season where you live. Buying fruits that are in season means you'll be getting fresh, juicy, recently picked fruits! You can find out what's in season by researching the fruit and veg seasons in your country online or in the library! Some types of fruit go together particularly well, for example tropical fruits tend to go well together - but you're sure to figure out some great combinations through experimentation!Add-Ins
Once you have your base, it's time to add in your extras! I always try to add in some sort of citrus juice like lemon or lime juice, as this will stop fruits like apples from oxidising (turning brown). You could also add in things like nuts, seeds, and dried fruits - these are not usually found in a fruit salad, but can add a really interesting level of crunch and texture!Time to Eat!
Once you've made your fruit salad, it's time to eat! Remember that fruit is very high in fibre, so if you aren't used to eating a lot of fibre it might be a good idea to work up to being able to ingest lots instead of having a whole bunch right off the bat. Also be careful if you included a lot of pineapple or kiwi in your salad, as these fruits can hurt your mouth if eaten in large amounts! What's your fave fruit combination?
