Hawaii: Before Paradise

Prije 73 mjeseca

Millions of years before Hawaii became the paradise we know - or even the Europeans arriving there - The Islands were first found by someone else: The Polynesians.

The first inhabitians of the Hawaiian islands came from all over the Pacific Ocean. They were voyagers that went from island to island.

With them, they brought the Taro plant (Colocasia Esculenta) that they planted on the margins of the rivers and became an inportant source of food: the so-called Poi, a dough acquired by mashing the plant's cooked bulb and mixing in some water.

With this plant, the population didn't starve (due to Hawaii's soil being bad for food crops) and as years passed, a new generation was born: the first Hawaiians.

As many Polynesians from different locations came to the islands, many tribes were formed. Inicidentally, all the islands had different tribes and rulling chiefs, some islands even had more than one tribe. It was only in 1782, that Kamehameha, a chief, started a 13-year war to unite all the islands, which was only possible with the modern weapons brought by the Europeans. Kamehameha created a government based on European principles and proclaimed himself the first King of Hawaii. The Kingdom of Hawaii was officially born.

From then on, Hawaii started commercial relationships with America and started to receive lots of immigrants from abroad, such as Europeans and Asians to work on the sugar plantations. the first Portuguese came to the islands in 1878 and brought with them what is considered to be a crucial part of Hawaiian culture.
