Raksha Bandhan
Otherwise known as Rakhi, is an Indian festival which celebrates the love between brothers and sisters. The actual 'rakhi' is a bracelet made of silk with gold and silver threads, and symbolises love.
Rakhi means "bond of protection," and is not only given to family members. In fact, when a 'rakhi' is tied around the wrist of close friends and neighbours, it binds the relationship in a strong bond of love and trust. On a social context, it indicates the view that everybody should live harmoniously with each other.
Celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravana, it is customary for sisters to pray for long life of their brothers and ask God to bless them. In turn, brothers give them rakhi gifts and commit to always caring for and protecting their sisters.
Will you be giving a rakhi gift? If so, here are some top tips to choosing the right gift:
1. If there is something they have been meaning to buy for a long time, this Rakhi might be a good time to make that purchase!
2. Ensure that the gift reflects your feelings for you loved ones.
3. Don't think about the price tag - sometimes less is more, and it's the thought that counts!
4. Give something different than what you gave last year.
5. Ensure that the gift reflects your loved ones' personality type.
