On Pointe: Black Swan Ballet Trends Offscreen

Best Picture might still be up for grabs, but up until the Oscar nominations were announced last week, both Hollywood and the fashion world assumed that Black Swan would take home the gold for Best Costume Design. As it turns out, Darren Aronofsky’s disturbing hit isn’t even on the ballot. The snub likely has to do with the negative buzz surrounding costume designer Amy Westcott, who is currently in a credits battle with Kate and Laura Mulleavy of the savvy label Rodarte. Depending on who you ask, the duo’s sartorial contribution ranges from forty to seven pieces.
This isn’t the first snafu of its kind, either. Edith Head infamously accepted the Oscar for dressing Audrey Hepburn in Sabrina, when Hubert de Givenchy was actually responsible for the still-worthy wardrobe. Despite the Academy’s decision, Black Swan continues to influence trends, importing its graceful ballet looks from the screen to the spring and pre-fall 2011 runways of Chloé, Chanel, Azzaro, and Burberry Prorsum.
Anyone can replicate this graceful style with a few easy twists: leotard tops worn with flowing skirts, feathers, satin or leather flats, high buns, and lots of light pink.
