What do people value the most now?
"You can tell what a society values the most by what their tallest building is."
September 3rd is observed as Skycraper Day, an unoffical national holiday that encourages us to think about the brilliant minds and costly process of designing, engineering and developing skyscrapers.
Skyscrapers are long lasting, high-rise buildings that reportedly first popped up in America's major cities. In a city center, finance and economics play a role and skyscrapers are often connected to an economic purpose. Example: The Empire State building was first opened in 1931 and is still active today.Several countries have symbolic monuments that represent them, from the Statue of Liberty, to the Taj Mahal, Eiffel Tower and Nortre Dame, Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Sphinx, to the Burj Khalifa which happens to be the tallest skycraper in the world. All of these structures arguably represent what societies valued most throughout history.
Perhaps, there will be no place left to go except underground and space itself in terms of building. When we are long gone, future archeologists and historians will study us. If places of worship such as churches and synagogues represent a society's religious values, then what will the tallest skyscrapers say about our values, in the future?
